Many schools in California have changed their school calendar so that they are now year-round schools. Students will later post definitions written on 3" x 5" index cards next to the words.

Once students have shared, explain that sometimes when you believe in something, you want others to believe in it also and you might try to get them to change their minds.
Essay lesson persuasive teaching would rather spend more time getting it right at the pre-writing stage than have a student go off willy-nilly, draft a full essay, then realize they need to start over. Instead of using all 5 scenarios on Day 1, choose two or three and have one group support the argument while another group supports the opposite viewpoint.

Follow these rules of the game: Want this unit ready-made? For you, this would mean adapting to a new town, a new school, and new friends. This has been my number one strategy for teaching students how to become better writers. Students then choose their own persuasive piece to analyze and learn some of the definitions associated with persuasive writing.
Here they are still doing verbal argument, but the experience should make them more likely to appreciate the value of evidence when trying to persuade. When students see how messy the process can be, it becomes less intimidating for them.
